Key takeaways

  • US spot Ether ETFs posted net outflows for a 10th consecutive session on October 12, 2026 (−$85.4 million), according to Farside Investors.
  • Since September 29 the streak adds up to −$782.8 million, an average of about $78 million a day.
  • BlackRock's ETHA accounts for $581.2 million, or 74% of the total.
  • Our calculation: the streak equals 5.9% of all net inflows into Ether ETFs since their July 2024 launch ($13.2 billion). Over the same 10 sessions, spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $534.2 million, only 0.9% of their cumulative $57.1 billion.
  • Ether fell about 6.7% over the period, from about $2,690 on September 29 to about $2,510 on the morning of October 13 (UTC), while Bitcoin was roughly flat (CoinGecko).

  • Relative size matters more than the headline. In dollars, the Ether streak is not much larger than Bitcoin ETF outflows over the same days. Relative to the money each product has gathered since launch, it is about six times heavier.
  • It is persistent, not a single shock. Bitcoin ETF outflows were concentrated in two sessions (−$484.9 million on October 7 and −$244.1 million on October 8, see our October 7 outflow analysis), with inflow days in between. Ether funds have had no inflow day since September 28.
  • Price followed. Ether underperformed Bitcoin by about 6.7 points over the period and is down about 15% year to date (from about $2,970 on December 31, 2025), against about 6% for Bitcoin.

Why are Ether ETFs losing money?

Farside's data shows the flows, not who sells or why. Three factors are consistent with the numbers, but none can be confirmed from public flow data alone:

  • Higher yields. The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.24% on October 9 and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack argued for a restrictive stance on October 12 (our analysis of her speech and the yield curve). Higher risk-free returns usually hit higher-beta assets such as ETH first. Our guide on how Fed rates affect crypto explains the mechanism.
  • Relative positioning. When investors cut crypto exposure, the second-largest asset is often trimmed before Bitcoin, which many allocators treat as the core holding.
  • Ethereum-specific narrative. Debate over the network's roadmap and value capture by layer 2s continues; see Buterin's Lean Ethereum roadmap and our explainer on Ethereum layer 1 and layer 2.

FAQ

How long is the current Ether ETF outflow streak?

Ten consecutive US trading sessions, from September 29 to October 12, 2026, for a total of −$782.8 million according to Farside Investors.

Which Ether ETF lost the most?

BlackRock's iShares Ethereum Trust (ETHA), with −$581.2 million over the streak, including −$201.9 million on October 6 alone.

Are Ether ETFs still positive since launch?

Yes. Cumulative net inflows stood at about $13.2 billion after October 12, despite about $5.5 billion of net outflows from Grayscale's ETHE since its conversion.

Do ETF outflows mean people are selling ETH?

Redemptions mean the funds' shares are being redeemed, so the issuer typically delivers or sells the underlying ETH through authorized participants. It does not tell us whether the end investor is exiting crypto or switching products.
